The OCCT3D development team is pleased to announce the upcoming release of a new commercial component designed to facilitate the seamless import and export of data using the Universal Scene Description (USD) format. This commercial component will be available starting from February, 2025 for OCCT versions 7.8, 7.8.1, and subsequent feature releases.
USD Description
USD, developed by Pixar Animation Studios, is a powerful and versatile framework for describing, assembling, and exchanging 3D scenes. It has gained widespread adoption across various industries, including film, visual effects, game development, and virtual reality, due to its robust capabilities and efficient handling of complex data. Component Capabilities
The new USD Import/Export component will empower OCCT users to leverage the advantages of USD within their workflows. It supports a comprehensive range of attributes, including:
- Geometry: Mesh, primitives
- Appearance: Colors, textures, materials
- Scene Organization: Name, hierarchy
- MetaData: Key-value pairs
Supported File Formats:
- Import: USD, USDZ, USDA
- Export: USD, USDA
Seamless Data Exchange (DE) with OCCT
This new component is deeply integrated with OCCT's DE framework, providing a familiar and consistent experience for users. Leveraging the DE plug-in functionality, it ensures a standardized approach to importing and exporting USD data.
Furthermore, by storing all imported data as either TopoDS_Shape or XCAF documents, the component allows smooth interoperability with OCCT's core modeling functionalities and a wide array of other data formats. This opens up possibilities for diverse conversion workflows, such as:
- Open Source Formats: STP, IGES, GLTF, GLB, OBJ, VRML, STL
- Commercial Formats: DXF, JT, SAT, Parasolid (x_t, x_b)
