I have also received the same message.
Infact, I just received that message last night.
I am using SuSE 9.1 on an intel based machine.
I am also looking for suggestions!
Thanks,
Jeff

Check that you are using official Sun implementation of JAVA.
The free/libre implementations, such as the one that Debian uses, will not work.
I download and the Sun implementation and it worked.
Possibly the same for SuSE.
I agree that it would be nice to have available a simple .tar.gz
It is ironic that non-free software is required to install free software.

When I ran the command
java -verbose -jar Linux/setup.jar
The installer appeared to work!
I do know why.

At first I had the same message on Suse 9.2 but using java -verbose -jar setup.jar it worked immediately.
Thanks Jeff.

I installed it on Suse 9.2 and it worked but I can't run the examples. I try to run java samples with no success. Do I need the java version 1.3.04? I think I have a higher version installed.
