OpenCASCADE & 64bit Windows

Hello to everybody!

Has anyone tried to port OpenCASCADE to 64bit Windows? -
Or, are there any intentions to do so? - At least on part of Open CASCADE S.A.?
If so:
- What are the pitfalls?
- Whereon do we have to pay attention to?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

The usual problems, an int is no longer 32 bits, its 64 bits, just that can mess up things pretty bad, if there is code that reads/writes binary data to from files it might get even worse, but otherwise it should not be any big problem porting it to a 64 bit environment.

Hi Michael,

If I remember correctly, OCC was supporting DEC Alpha windows NT 4.0 (OCC versions < 2.0 ). So I don't know if they removed the alpha code from the sources, but you can have a look.
And is not the SUN SPARC (supported by OCC) a 64 processor ?
not sure...

HTH,

Stephane

Hello again!

Thanks for your comments!
For us only the not-yet-released "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" makes sense. When it is released (probably in August 2005) it will run on related AMD-Processors respectively Intel EM64T. Currently there is only a Release Cadidate available. Concerning the development platform, the Visual Studio 2005 will be available named as "AMD 64-Bit". From the technological point of view it seems, that Intel adopted AMD in this case. Separated from this post I'll send you a file, with additional information. This also states, against the predication of Mikael, that on this platform only the pointer types (pointer, handles, ...) are real 64 bit types. An "int" still has 32 bits.

Thanks,
Michael

Is there any news regarding the compilation of OC for Windows XP x64 or Windows Server 2003 x64 or Itanium ?
I agree with Michael : there are new types for int64, only size of pointers are affected.
